Population; the enemy in the room, by John Feeney, in the BBC's VIEWPOINT of Feb 2,2009 raises a topic that has been kept in the closet far too long. In the debate about the environment and the effects of climate change, much is written and said about how humans themselves have contributed to the catastrophic effects of pollution, the erosion of both forests and sustainable agricultural land, the extreme changes in temperature, but hardly a word on the trends of population growth and its social impact.
